{"id":136,"date":"2011-06-20T16:08:48","date_gmt":"2011-06-20T21:08:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/horizon-research.com\/atlast\/?page_id=136"},"modified":"2011-10-05T21:59:13","modified_gmt":"2011-10-05T21:59:13","slug":"page64-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/horizon-research.com\/atlast\/?page_id=136","title":{"rendered":"Prompt Element: Lends itself to expansive answers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brief responses\u00a0can provide some insight on students\u2019 thinking, but prompts that encourage relevant, elaborate responses\u00a0paint more complete pictures of student conceptual frameworks.\u00a0 More expansive answers not only provide more student input regarding the specifics of a particular scenario\/relationship, they may also reveal more general thoughts that provide insights on how students approach the underlying ideas. \u00a0Formulating such a prompt can be as simple as adding a \u201dwhy\u201c question to a yes\/no question.<\/p>\n<p>Open-ended prompts also tend to encourage expansive answers if they invite students to express connections among pieces of knowledge rather than the pieces of knowledge in isolation:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201dWhat do plants use energy for?\u00a0 Where does that energy come from?\u201c<\/em> will more likely yield expansive answers than <em>\u201dWhat are the products of photosynthesis?
