Exploring microhabitats in the school yard<\/h4>\n
Purpose:<\/strong> Students continue to look for ladybugs outside, and analyzing previously collected data helps them make sense of patterns in ladybug sightings. Students focus on habitat as they take a closer look at locations on their school grounds. Students will also compare locations\u2019 features (e.g., vegetation, sun exposure, level of human activity).<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” text_line_height=”1.6em” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n Assist students in utilizing the mapping feature on iNaturalist to zoom in to where ladybugs have been found on your school grounds. <\/span>As students explore the mapping feature, allow time to find patterns in the data consistent with your School Grounds Map and data recording sheets. Consider where native\/non-native species have been found in relation to various microhabitats on your school grounds.\u00a0<\/span> <\/span>Guide students in making sense of their data by recording their observations and inferences regarding the microhabitats where ladybugs have been found in your school grounds based on your data sources.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Students should compare their findings across data sources to attempt to identify common features or criteria that might help define those habitats that are most suitable for ladybugs. Ask students what they could do to determine whether the features and criteria discussed apply at other times of year and in other places in the country and around the world. This is a common method used in science for improving understanding of organism behavior. ladybugs have been found, Ms. Jones decides to use this as an opportunity to help students understand the difference between observations and inferences. Ms. Jones facilitates a discussion in which students share observations, which she reminds students are things that they can sense (in this case, see). She records these observations on the left side of a T-chart. She then asks students to consider why they observed ladybugs in these locations and how features of these locations supported their survival; Ms. Jones records these ideas in a column on the right side. After students populate the table, Ms. Jones labels the column \u201cInferences\u201d and shares that inferences use your knowledge to make sense of your observations. She informs students that as they continue to observe and learn about ladybugs, their inferences may change. school grounds. In addition, the chemicals in pesticides may pose risks to humans (Damalas, 2009), and children may be at greater risk for various diseases associated with pesticide exposure (Kim, et al., 2017). There are other ways to control weeds or invasive bug species, such as liquid soap solutions or integrative pest controls options (See the NCSU <\/span>IPM for Schools<\/span><\/a> resources for more information). This can all be explored in more detail by your students as a topic for final presentations in the Culminating Activities<\/a>, if they show strong interest in this topic.
