He would like to help students understand the difference between the two and that habitats vary in size based on the organism. Mr. Jones directs students’ attention to the “habitat” section of their recording sheet for the Lost Ladybug Project and asks what they notice. Although students have been recording these data (e.g., garden, pavement, bushes/shrubs, building) throughout the year, they had not considered the specificity and the importance of these small habitats, often referred to as “microhabitats” by scientists. Mr. Jones refers students back to their schoolyard map and asks students to consider what would happen if the bush outside their classroom where they’ve found several ladybugs were removed. Students express concern over this idea, recognizing that aphids and other insects would not have the bush to feed on, and therefore, ladybugs would not have those insects to eat. Mr. Jones then asks students what could be added to their school grounds that could likely serve as a microhabitat for ladybugs and gives students time to generate ideas with a partner. Once students list ideas, Mr. Jones challenges them to support their ideas for habitat improvements with data collected by their own class or another class. Mr. Jones provides the following example: “I think we could add more flowering plants near the entrance of our school, because the other class found several ladybugs on flowers planted near the entrance to their school at the beginning of the school year. We only found one near the entrance of our school even though we looked there five times in the first couple months of school.”

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Objectives” module_id=”lbfieldguide” _builder_version=”4.16″ background_enable_color=”off” custom_padding=”35px|||||” border_width_top=”8px” border_color_top=”#cc232f” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_4,3_4″ use_custom_gutter=”on” gutter_width=”1″ make_equal=”on” admin_label=”Module Heading with Icon” _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”||1px|||” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_css_main_element=”width: 15%!important;” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_image src=”https://horizon-research.com/tl4cs/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Asset-20.png” title_text=”Asset 20″ show_bottom_space=”off” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”3_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” header_font=”EB Garamond||||||||” header_text_align=”left” header_text_color=”#454545″ header_font_size=”42px” header_line_height=”2.2em” header_3_font=”|700|||||||” header_3_text_color=”#454545″ header_3_font_size=”26px” header_line_height_tablet=”1.2em” header_line_height_phone=”1.2em” header_line_height_last_edited=”on|tablet” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Ladybug Habitats

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

During this month’s activity, students will be comparing where ladybugs have been found on your school grounds with another location’s grounds in terms of different habitat features and the specific features of these locations.
