  • Kristen A. Malzahn, Senior Researcher at Horizon Research, Inc. (HRI), received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, IN and a Master’s degree in Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Prior to joining HRI in 2001, she taught at the elementary level and served as a lead teacher for the school and district. Her interests include designing and researching effective mathematics professional development for elementary teachers. She recently co-authored Activating Math Talk: 11 Purposeful Techniques for Your Elementary Students.

    Ms. Malzahn has worked on several research projects in her time at HRI, including Fostering Mathematics Success of English Language Learners (FMSELL), Peers Engaged as Resources in Learning (PEARL), and the 2000, 2012, and 2018 iterations of the National Survey of Science and Mathematics (NSSME). She also served as a co-PI of Project All Included in Mathematics (Project AIM), and is currently the co-PI of Project AIM New Extensions (AIM-NEXT). She has managed the evaluation of several projects, including NSF’s Local Systemic Change through Teacher Enhancement Initiative (LSC), Learning and Teaching Geometry (LTG), Enhancing Mathematics Teaching and Learning in Urban Elementary Schools (EMTL), and Visual Access to Mathematics (VAM).
