Project Description
Knowledge Assets to Support the Science Instruction of Elementary Teachers (ASSET) is explored a method for generating collective pedagogical content knowledge (C-PCK). This method was tested in two content areas: (1) the small particle model for matter and (2) interdependent relationships in ecosystems. The two content areas were first unpacked into key ideas. Literature reviews, surveys, and interviews with practicing elementary teachers and curriculum developers helped determine what is known in the field about teaching and learning of each of the key ideas, including common patterns of student thinking and successful instructional strategies. We have arranged the C-PCK for these two topics in a series of driving question pathways, accessible through this website. The project was lead by P. Sean Smith (PI), R. Keith Esch (co-PI), and Courtney N. Plumley (co-PI).

Research Purpose
The project’s purpose was to contribute to a developing theory of Collective Pedagogical Content Knowledge (C-PCK), which includes the research literature, practitioner literature and collective wisdom of practice. The research sought to understand how C-PCK can be made more useful for teachers. The research questions are:

  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of the knowledge collection and synthesis method?
  • What factors must be taken into account in applying the knowledge collection and synthesis method across science topics?
  • What affordances and limitations does the web-based resource present for teachers primarily, and for teacher educators and instructional materials developers?
  • How does access to content-specific teaching knowledge affect teachers’ planning and instruction?
