Project Description
MIST (Mathematics Immersion for Secondary Teachers) is a late-stage design and development study focused on secondary mathematics teacher professional development. The purpose of MIST is to refine and scale an existing model for a content-based, blended (in-person and online) course and to investigate effects of scaling up on the course and impacts of participation on teachers. MIST will provide a cost-effective model for a practice-based mathematics immersion course in which a trained facilitator and approximately four sites meet online, with 4-7 teachers meeting in person at each site.
Research Purpose
MIST addresses the following research questions:
- How well can instructors enact the MIST blended course design with fidelity and create immersion experiences in mathematics for participating teachers?
- What variations exist among instructors’ enactment of the MIST courses? What explains differences in enactment, and how do they relate to teachers’ experiences in the courses?
- What is the impact of MIST on teacher’s
- mathematical habits of mind,
- beliefs about the nature of mathematics and mathematics teaching, and
- engagement in their professional mathematics community?
- What is the impact of MIST on teachers’ instructional practices, particularly on the types of investigative mathematics learning experiences that teachers provide for students?
