AI Institute: Artificial Intelligence for Environmental Sciences (AI2ES)

Organization(s): University of Oklahoma
Funding Agency: National Science Foundation
Program: AI Research Institutes, EarthCube
HRI Role: Evaluation

Project Description
The overarching vision for AI2ES is to create trustworthy artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) methods that diverse environmental science groups will use to transform understanding and prediction of high-impact atmospheric and ocean science phenomena and to create new educational pathways for developing a larger and more diverse AI/environmental science workforce. The institute’s convergent research incorporates foundational research in trustworthy AI, use-inspired research in environmental science, and foundational research in AI risk communication for environmental science hazards, all with an overarching emphasis on ethical, responsible, and use-inspired AI. The research provides a foundation for the institute’s robust workforce development effort, which will broaden participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and build the next generation of the AI-trained workforce.

Evaluation Services
HRI’s evaluation includes giving feedback on the project’s activities and products. HRI is also examining the synergistic functioning of the Institute’s cross-organizational working groups.
