Organization: Alabama A&M University
Funding Agency: National Science Foundation
Program: Historically Black Colleges and Universities – Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP)
HRI Role: Evaluation

Project Description
The Introducing STEM to Provide Incentives for Research and Education (INSPIRE) project is building on previous successful efforts at AAMU and implementing new ones to increase participation of underrepresented minorities in STEM disciplines. The overarching project goal is to use evidence-based strategies and activities for teaching, retaining, and graduating undergraduate STEM students. Toward this end, the project identified four sub-goals: (1) To augment a robust undergraduate program by retaining, mentoring, and graduating underrepresented minorities in STEM disciplines; (2) To enhance the quality of AAMU students’ learning experience and depth of knowledge by expanding undergraduate research opportunities; (3) To intervene in middle school mathematics; and (4) To institutionalize evidence-based teaching techniques.

Evaluation Services
HRI’s evaluation includes giving feedback on the project’s activities and examining impacts of INSPIRE activities on middle school and university students.
