PlantingScience F2: The Next Generation of Collaborative Teacher/Scientist Professional Development (F2)

Organization: Botanical Society of America
Funding Agency: National Science Foundation
Program: Discovery Research K-12 (DRK-12)
HRI Role: Evaluation

Project Description
F2 is a partnership between The Botanical Society of America (BSA), BSCS Science Learning (BSCS), and researchers at University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (UCCS). The purpose of the F2 project is two-fold. First, it is replicating a study conducted in their previously NSF-funded Digging Deeper (DIG) project, which links high school students in classrooms with scientist mentors via an online community in the PlantingScience (PS) program. The study will examine the effectiveness of a professional development (PD) component for teachers and scientists to use in concert with the PlantingScience Power of Sunlight module. Second, with an eye toward scaling the work, an online version of the PD is being developed and its effectiveness examined in comparison to the face-to-face PD. The project will examine both impact and implementation research questions using a cluster-randomized design and a mixed-methods approach, respectively.

Evaluation Services
HRI’s evaluation includes giving feedback on the project’s PD interventions and research activities. In addition, HRI is reviewing the project’s research products and evaluating the project’s contributions to the knowledge base.
